Shop-floor production workflow
A multi-year modernization of a job manager used all day by print and workshop teams — first making a hostile legacy UI usable, then replacing it with a component-based app operators actually asked for.
The situation
Daily production lived in a slow, opaque interface. Status was hard to read, history was buried, mobile was an afterthought, and sections re-fetched everything on every click. The people on the floor had a list of what would actually help. The software did not.
What we did
- Color-coded job status, quick actions, daily history, and a “Today” marker instead of raw dates.
- Job preview on history, Esc-to-clear search, and files visible in the details pane.
- Stale-while-revalidate API cache so sections feel instant on repeat visits.
- Component-based rebuild in Vue: mobile views, department-custom ToDo badges, multi-location support, saved filters, backup/export, and automated job-state sync.
Where it landed
Operators got a floor tool that matches how a shop actually runs — on desktop and mobile — instead of a legacy console they had to work around.
